Today Marks 18 Years for Me and June!

Eighteen years ago I married the lovely, June Sass Fuentes. Our journey has truly been a testimony to the goodness of God, and an extension of His grace to those who desperately need Him.

We were young and broken when when we wed, and today, by God's grace, we're building a home that will bring Him glory and leave a Godly legacy and heritage that our children will carry on.

Thank you, June, for the past eighteen years, and I look with anticipation to the next eighteen.

I love you more than you know!

It's About Time, Not Gifts, On Father's Day

As a father of eight wonderful children, I can speak with absolute certainty when I say; Father's day is truly about spending time with your loved ones, and not about getting gifts from them! (And as side note, since we're a one income home, I kinda know who's financing those gifts. But shh, don't tell the kids!)

For many years now, my family has been blessed with the opportunity to host my family's father's day gathering. We spend the day, after church, gathering around good food, good fellowship, and always, good laughs. We normally take some time to go around the room and have the various families in attendance say a few words about my dad, Reynaldo P. Fuentes. He's the patriarch of the Fuentes family, and to date, has been blessed with 22 grand-children from his four children. Truly a gift from the LORD!

My dad's a humble man, who is seeking to live out his remaining years as a shining example to his children and grand-children, of what a man looks like as he serves the LORD in his "golden years." My dad was saved later in life, somewhere around 60 or so, and has been playing catch-up ever since. He hasn't wasted any time cherishing his family heritage, pouring love on his children and grand-children, and conforming his life to the will of God. He's a great guy, who you can't help but like the first time you meet him.

My dad always tried his best to provide us with a nice place to live, nice clothe to wear, and good times to remember growing up. He did what he could from a distance, being that he and my mom divorced when I was young. My three siblings and I (pictured with my folks) were fortunate in that, while other men usually divorced their kids along with their wives, my dad never did. He always stayed in our lives and we knew he'd be there when we needed him. I never wondered if my dad loved me because whenever I got to spend time with him growing up, he told me he did. And for a kid growing up in inner city Chicago, that meant a lot!

So as I get to see my dad on Father's Day every year, I know there's nothing I could give him that would bring him more delight or happiness than a good cup of coffee and some time on the couch talking about life. After a quick chat, he usually heads out to play T-rex with his grand kids and throws the football around with them too. You see, gifts could never bring what my dad, and all dads I know, really want, which is more time to enjoy those who are eternal. We are happy just to be called Dad, and no amount of money spent on a gift we may or may not need, can ever compare to just spending time with those you love the most.

If you still have your dad in your life, don't let this Father's Day go without letting him know how much you care for him. Gifts don't convey love, words do. Gifts don't mend relationships, words do. Gifts aren't remembered, words are. So if there's anything you should give your dad this Father's Day, it should be YOU! Give him your full undivided attention, give him perhaps his favorite meal, give him as many of your family members as you can squeeze into your home, and most importantly, give him your time, because after all, that's all he really needs.

May God Bless you, and Happy Father's Day to all you Dads out there. . .

You Only Get One Shot

Pictured here is my little, Joy Noelle. She's 6, and it seems like just yesterday we welcomed her into our home after her arrival in the world.

The same is true with all my children. When each of our eight children have been born it seemed as though June and I had our entire lives to raise them. We felt like we had time to squander, time to make mistakes, time to pursue our desires, and then, eventually get around to raising our kids.

Sadly, this isn't how life goes. Time waits for no one, and like it or not, our kids grow older whether we invest time in them or not. They will eventually become adults, move on with their lives, start families of their own, start businesses, become parents, and do all the things that God created them to do--question is-- will I feel content with how I raised them when that time comes?

I only get one shot at raising them, so I need to be sure I'm aiming my arrows at the right target. What will it matter if I play in sports leagues as an adult, if my kids wished I was with them? What will it matter if I pursue my desires, if my kids wished I pursued them? What will it matter if I advanced my career, if my kids wished I had advanced my relationship with them? What will it matter if gain the whole world, but forfeit the souls of my little ones to the god of personal pleasure?

We only get one shot men, are you aiming at the correct target? Will you be one of those Dads who grows old with a heart of regret because you pursued the meaningless, at the expense of the meaningful? Will you wish you had invested in them as much as you invested in those who in the end, are no where to be found?

Don't be that Man!
Invest in your kids while you still have time. Devote your life to ensuring that your kids walk faithfully with the LORD, cause truth be told, that's all that really matters!

Strong words from a strong Man of God. Hope they help you gain perspective!

Love Your Wives...

25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; Ephesians 5:25

The most important duty a husband has toward his wife is to love her. Protecting, providing, leading and everything else that a husband should do for his wife is wrapped up in these words...Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church.

If a husband truly loves his wife, doing all the things that the word of God says he should do will be an honor. For the Christian Husband whose heart has grown cold toward his wife through sin and disobedience, doing anything for his wife will seem like drudgery. What a shame that, the one man who his wife has placed all of her hopes and aspirations in, has chosen to trample on the soul of the woman he said he would love.

Let us as Husbands seek to do the will of God. You don't have to guess at God's will for you in your marriage. You don't need your wife telling you that things need to change. You don't need booze to wash away your sorrows. You simply need to start actling like a Man. Start loving your wife and start watching her blossom.

Seek to:
  • Honor her with your speech.
  • Understand her with mind.
  • Cultivate her with your hands.
  • Encourage her with your tongue.
  • Embrace her with your heart.
  • Defend her with your life.
May the Lord's peace and strength fall upon us all as we seek to carry out His glorious commands!

God Bless You Men...and begin today to love the wife of your covenant!
