Adolescence: Why Don't Men Grow Up?

Our culture is filled with men who refuse to grow up, with women who accept men who won't grow up, and parents who raise their sons to become these men. This is sad but true.

As Christians, we have no excuse for this. The word clearly calls men to be the priests, prophets, providers, and protectors of their homes. Too often, I see men laying these responsibilities on the backs of their wives, and this is truly shameful behavior.

Give a listen to Mark Driscoll as he, in his usual funny, yet convicting manner, calls men to be men!

I was reading your wife's blog, when I noticed the link here. My son is 11 and he is the leader type personality. I wonder if you would recommend any devotion books or Bible studies for young men to encourage them on how to lead and exercise authority appropriately according to Biblical principles. It would be nice if he could have a young men's Bible study group with his friends with an emphasis on growing in their roles as Christian men.

Sg,

The best way for your son to cultivate his leadership skills is to be around other leaders he can learn from. Not boy leaders so much, but good strong men leaders. Maybe he can visit some good Men's bible study groups with your husband or another person you trust.

As far as books, I really enjoyed "Future Men" by Douglas Wilson. It's more for parents gaining a vision for raising sons, but he would probably enjoy it as well. Read it first to see if you find it appropriate for him!
